The Tofu Made Me Queer

Okay, I heard the wooly argument about how the estrogen in soy (and soy products) stimulates female hormones in men thus turning them gay. I really thought it was just material for the Fake Gay News. The only real risk I see in eating lots of soy is the possibility of developing man boobs. Which can be cute (and at times a little scary).

Jim Rutz over at the WorldNet Daily expounds on the danger of soy in his recent column, A devil food is turning our kids into homosexuals
Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality. That's why most of the medical (not socio-spiritual) blame for today's rise in homosexuality must fall upon the rise in soy formula and other soy products. (Most babies are bottle-fed during some part of their infancy, and one-fourth of them are getting soy milk!) Homosexuals often argue that their homosexuality is inborn because "I can't remember a time when I wasn't homosexual." No, homosexuality is always deviant. But now many of them can truthfully say that they can't remember a time when excess estrogen wasn't influencing them.
Rutz fails to list a single report to backup his claims.
So what is wrong with being feminized? He makes it sounds like to be a feminized male is a fate worse than death. Of course he is ONLY concerned with male homosexuality (the most dangerous and important type I guess). Perhaps lesbians don't get enough of the feminizing soy formula.

After blowing up the dangers of soy (cancer, penile shrinkage--horror!, infertility), Rutz ends with some good news.
Soy sauce is fine. Unlike soy milk, it's perfectly safe because it's fermented, which changes its molecular structure. Miso, natto and tempeh are also OK, but avoid tofu.
As a dietary vegan, I think it is important to introduce diversity into our diets. Soy is not the ONLY source of healthy protein. So yeah, lay off too much soy. But don't take up cow's milk! One liter of cow's milk requires 990 liters of water to produce. (A fact I read in the Independent this weekend)

But how many people will read Rutz' inane and insane piece clutching at straws to determine the source of homosexuality, thinking there must be a logical reason why someone is "that way"? But they MUST have a reason why God's design has been flawed. It couldn't be that the Bible has any flaws. Now that is crazy talk.

Way cool. If and when I have kids I will feed them with soy-products. I wonder what kind of effect all that tartex has on us, Peterson ;)

That is the second time today that I have heard that estrogen make men homosexual. As a transperson I have met many person who have started taking estrogen and I have only met one or two who started to be attracted to men by taking estrogen. If you give a gay man more testosterone the statistical odds is that he will get more interested in sex with men. If a straight man gets more testosterone and something happens to his sexuality it will be that he will become more interested in sex with woman.

If estrogen and testosterone would define who we were attracted to I think us transpeople in transition would tell us that.

BTW. I try not to eat soy products and my testosterone levels are most definitely higher then Jim Rutz's. I am still frustratingly attracted to men.

"I am still frustratingly attracted to men."--Aww, Alex, we aren't really that bad, are we? hehe

Personally, I think the whole soy argument is a bunch of bullshit. Let people eat what they want to eat, for goodness' sake! I don't eat a lot of tofu just because it's got a weird texture that I wasn't brought up on as a child, so I'm not used to it. But people should just eat what they wish to! And I also think that the connection between certain foods to homosexuality need to be laid off upon. Give it a break!

Hmmmmm. Now wait a minute. I was gay nd knew it long before I ate any tofu (or other soya bean products). But then (just like PT fell in love with Tartex) I fell in love with TOFU (real, homemade, soft, silky, seductive Tofu) when I travelled frequently in China a few years ago. Can't say I've noticed it making me any MORE gay.

I was raised on cow's milk and had all natural animal products all throughout my childhood and early adulthood, so not sure how I turned out gay.

And with all the soy products they have in China, you would think they would be overloaded with gays.

Now I don't know about what the effects of Tartex are on one's sexuality, but with dinner tonight I had some loving acorn and wheat bread slathered with Tartex. It was orgasmic. But then, Tartex has a profound effect on me.

If soy is feminizing, then it should decrease the risk of prostate cancer. But this is not the case.

[Peterson, where do you FIND these screwballs??!]

My mom's friend (the one who won't hold hands with men in the prayer circle for fear of turning them on and leading them into sexual temptation) won't feed her boys soy for this reason. Despite this I do believe her youngest child may indeed be gay ... so I don't know what this says :-)

My husband emailed me this very same article just today (not from your blog, peterson, which is absolutely divine) and all I could do was laugh.

Laughter remains good medicine.

I know soy has something in it--it calms me during Hell Week, just a little bit. But it's certainly not like five birth control pills in a glass! Soy milk is also clearly marked, "Not to be used as infant formula."

Did you notice also the usual concurrent hatred and disrespect for sexual women? If your daughter has an early-onset period, it takes away her childhood! And femininity is evil!!!

There's certainly a reason why people call it the "WorldNutDaily."

Thank God! Now I know why I'm a homo! Wow. After so many years of wondering...

Literally LOL -- what a load of horse shit!

yeah but aren't lesbians stereotypically supposed to love tofu? guess it hasn't done them any good.

I think the original post concentrates on the "soy makes you gay" aspect to the detriment of understanding the point.

I did a quick search and easily found precautions issued by Israel and New Zealand about giving soy to children. Also, the health food sites recommend soy for the same reason Rutz advises against it - it acts like estrogen and prevents hot flashes.

The health food advocates will ignore huge amounts of hormones if they occur naturally, while getting in an uproar over trace amounts if they are man-made (BGH in milk).

Early menarche in girls is not a joke but you make it one. I have read that doctors are very puzzled by it. Finding a possible cause should be good news.

You have all made some cute quips but nothing more.
